Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
The official vehicles of all officers above the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police will sport the blue light, while those used by officers below the rank of Dy.Sp will have lights that emit blue, red and white flashes. All vehicles attached to the police station, police control room, flying squads and the recently-introduced Highway patrols in the State and the mobile-enforcement vehicles of the Motor Vehicle Department also will have multi-coloured lights. The State police, which have the largest fleet of vehicles topped with red lights, have been opposing the move since 1999 when the Government issued an order in accordance with clause (iii) of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. The argument cited was that the red lights were a functional requirement in times of emergency. The decision to change the red beacon was taken in view of the recent Government Order further restricting its use.
