By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Sept. 12. Hectic preparations are on for the floating pageantry, which will mark the conclusion of the weeklong water sports festival Jalotsavam 2003 on the Karamana river on Saturday. Both the banks of the river from Karamana to Thiruvallam have been decked up for the event.

Hundreds of boats bearing floats and folk art performers will participate in the pageantry. The cine actor, Suresh Gopi, will lead the colourful procession. City residents are trickling in to view the giant floating mermaid near the Karamana bridge and the floating stage erected at Thiruvallam.

As many as 2,000 volunteers under 11 committees have been drafted for the smooth conduct of the event. More than 25 floats have registered for the pageantry. Boats from all over the district are making their way to Karamana by road and river.

The pageantry will take off with a formal inauguration near the Karamana bridge at 1 p.m. by the Information Minister, M.M.Hassan. The central organising committee chairman, N.Achuthan Nair, will raise the Jalotsavam flag. Mr.Suresh Gopi will light the ceremonial lamp. The Health Minister, P.Sankaran, the Mayor, J.Chandra, V.S.Sivakumar, MP, MLAs and councillors will participate.

At Thiruvallam, the Finance Minister, K.Sankaranarayana Pillai, will inaugurate a public meeting to signal the conclusion of the festival. This will be followed by a variety of cultural programmes.
