Man escapes from police custody with rifle

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM Sept. 12. Panic spread in the vicinity of the Karunagapally police station this morning when a man in custody escaped from the station after snatching a loaded rifle from the sentry.

The man in custody, identified as Rameshan, made the escape after assaulting the sentry who went to his cell to give him breakfast. An alarm raised by the sentry brought the other policemen of the station who were on parade at a nearby ground to the scene and together they chased and overpowered Rameshan. However, the scenes of chasing him and retrieving the rifle evoked some spine chilling moments.

Rameshan had been in police custody since yesterday. He was to be produced before a court at Karungapally this morning in connection with an abkari case.
