It is unlikely that Andhra Pradesh or Tamil Nadu will pose any problem for Karnataka in the final. Kerala's tactics of holding back its best player, K.A. Anish, the current State champion, for the third singles proved to be its undoing. That singles was not played as the State had slipped to defeat by then. His early entry and perhaps a win could have put Kerala on a strong footing. Still Kerala could have nursed hopes if it had won the first doubles after having gone down in the first two singles, Anup Sridhar getting the better of V. Diju and Rohan Castelino beating Joy T. Antony. The two-hour doubles battle saw fortunes fluctuating with extended rallies and some heart stopping placements, and the tie eventually went in favour of the Karnataka pair Ajit Wijetilak and Jose George. The Kerala pair of Rupesh Kumar and Jaison Xavier showed good touch but were not consistent. Earlier, Diju held the whiphand, after his sensational comeback from a game down, but inexplicably he slipped nearing the winning post. However it was National junior champion Castelino who lit the sparsely filled stadium with an outstanding show. The Karnataka's lad's wristy returns, sliced forecourt drops and taps to the deep had Joy Antony in trouble. It was easily the match of the day. However Kerala could take some comfort later when Aparna Balan inspired the women's team to an upset win over holder Andhra while Ayyappan Krishnan starred in the boys' team victory over Karnataka. Earlier the championship was inaugurated by the Pondicherry Chief Minister, Mr. N. Rangasamy. The results: Men: semifinal: Karnataka beat Kerala 3-0 (Anup Sridhar beat V. Dij 15-8, 4-15, 15-11; Rohan Castelino beat Joy T. Antony 15-12, 15-9; Ajit Wijetilak and Jose George beat Rupesh Kumar and Jaison Xavier 15-13, 7-15, 15-9.
