WB team to inspect work on highway

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA Sept. 13. The Public Works Minister, N. Dharam Singh, said here today that a team of senior officials of the World Bank and those of the Public Works Department would arrive here on Sunday to inspect the progress of the World Bank-assisted upgrading and maintenance of the State highway between Bidar and Srirangapatna.

Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Singh said the World Bank and PWD officials would visit the work spots and hold a review meeting with contractors and officials of the Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project (K-SHIP).

The Minister said the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Government and major cement companies in the district for upgrading the road from Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) at Shaktinagar in Raichur to Wadi in Gulbarga district at a cost of Rs. 58 crore on a cost-sharing basis, was yet to be approved by the Cabinet.

He said the memorandum of understanding would be placed before the Cabinet at its meeting on September 18 to get its approval to start work on laying a road from Wadi to Shaktinagar which would facilitate transport of fly ash from RTPS to the Associated Cement Company (ACC) plant at Wadi, Rajashree Cement Factory at Malkhed, and Vasavadatta Cement Factory at Sedam.

Mr. Singh said that as per the MoU, a loan of Rs. 58 crore would be raised from HUDCO and the cement companies had agreed to pay Rs. 25 crore. The Government would contribute the rest.

The Government had identified the Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd. (KRDCL) for implementing the project.

To another question, Mr. Singh said the Congress was confident of retaining the Hungund and wresting the Vemgal seat in the byelections to the Legislative Assembly, and made it clear that the bypolls were not a referendum on the performance of the Government.

Interest rates

Mr. Singh said the Government had written to the World Bank to revise the interest rates for loans extended for various projects in the State.

He said the Government had asked the World Bank to take into account the falling bank interest rates on advances all over the world and reduce them for the loans extended to the State.
