Minister tells NGOs to take up poverty alleviation schemes

By Our Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD SEPT. 13. The Union Minister of State for Defence, O. Rajagopal, has urged non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to take up rural poverty alleviation programmes as the Government agencies failed to achieve the desired aim.

Inaugurating the seventh anniversary celebrations of the Society for Rural Improvement (SRI) at Kollengode near here on Saturday, the Minister said the failure of Government agencies in implementing tribal uplift programmes in Attappady in the district after spending hundreds of crores of rupees was the best example of it.

Organisations like the SRI had succeeded in implementing rural women empowerment schemes, which should be extended to more areas particularly in the tribals belt, he said.

The District Collector, Sanjeev Kaushik, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, B. Sandhya, the Chief Executive of SRI, Prabhakar, spoke.
