Bijendar upsets Harikirshnan

Bijender of Haryana (left) aims for V. Harikrishnan's (RSPB) midriff in their light welterweight bout in the senior National boxing championship in Bangalore on Saturday.

BANGALORE Sept. 13. Bijendar of Haryana staged an upset in the light welterweight category of the senior National boxing championship defeating defending champion V. Harikrishnan of Railway Sports Promotion Board.

Bijender fresh from a training stint in Cuba has a good record as a junior boxer winning titles in Germany twice and bagging a bronze in Cuba. Harikrishnan had beaten T.B. Thapa of Meghalaya for the title last year.

The bout was action packed from the start. Harikrishnan a quarterfinalist at the Commonwealth tournament was a bit cagey at the start allowing Bijender to grow in confidence. The Haryana boxer flourished in the third round and soon, with a sizzling right uppercut, had put the Railways boxer under the mandatory count from the referee.

With another powerful punch landing from Bijender, Harikrishnan was reeling. He, however, fought on gamely to complete the fourth round and lose on points.

The Karnataka camp had much to cheer with its welterweight boxer Vibeeshan Lavi overpowering Manipur's Khomba Singh in a trice. Lavi, the 22 year-old boxer from Kolar gold fields went into attack from the word go and with a left hook-right followed by a right hook-left combination all but flattened Khomba Singh. The referee was quick to stop the contest after the powerful punches from Lavi had landed.

Lavi's win was, as he said later, a tribute to the confidence and superb technique his coach, former boxer and Arjuna Awardee, G. Manoharan had imparted. With hardly 20 days training Lavi, who was discarded from the Services squad, came up with a sterling performance that made everyone sit up and take notice.

The two bouts in the super heavyweight category turned out to be no contests. Service's V. Johnson needed just one punch to end Deepak Tyagi's hopes of reaching the finals. Tyagi retired after the blow Johnson landed.

In the other semifinal Jitender Kumar Singh of Meghalaya caught Andhra's P. Amarnath with a couple of killer blows. Amarnath waved the white flag soon after. In the light heavyweight section, Anant Singh of CISF toyed with Hardeep Singh Nagra of the Services. Hardeep, who was spurred on by teammate Dingko Singh from the wings, received a solid right hook which opened up a cut above his eye. The referee stopped the bout because of the injury in the third round.
