Indian juniors do well

NEW DELHI SEPT. 13. The Indian juniors asserted their class in the grade `I' ITF junior tennis tournament in Kentucky, US, as R. Arunprakash won the doubles title, and Karan Rastogi sailed into the singles final.

In the final, Arunprakash and Erik Chvojka of Canada defeated Matt Bruch and Greg Ouellette of the US 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The duo, that had beaten the top-seeded Miles Kasiri of Britain and Karan Rastogi in the second round in two tie-breaks, dropped a set for the first time in the whole tournament featuring a draw of 32.

It was the fourth doubles title for Arunprakash and his first in grade `I', which is next only in standard to the Grand Slams. The 18-year-old Arunprakash had won a grade `II' doubles title recently with Divij Sharan in South Africa.

The 16-year-old Karan Rastogi made his maiden singles final in a grade `I' tournament as he beat the eighth-seeded Robert Cameron of the US 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the semifinals.

Karan, who had beaten the second-seeded G.D. Jones of New Zealand in three sets in the earlier round, will meet the top-seeded Leonardo Kirche of Brazil.

It was a breakthrough effort for Karan as he had lost in the semifinals of two grade `I' tournaments this season. He had done well in doubles with Somdev Dev Varman in winning three titles in grade `I' events.

Harsh in doubles final

The third-seeded Harsh Mankad and Jason Marshall of the US beat Artem Sitak and Dmitri Sitak of Russia 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals of the $ 25,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Dontesk, Ukraine.

The Indo-US combination will be challenged by Sergey Stakhovsky of Ukraine and Andrei Stoliarov of Russia in the final.

Mustafa loses

Mustafa Ghouse and Oliver Freelove of Britain went down 2-6, 4-6 to the top-seeded Esteban Carril and Santiago Ventura of Spain in the semifinals of the $10,000 Futures tennis tournament in Madrid, Spain. Mustafa had lost in the pre-quarterfinals of singles.

Liza loses in doubles final

The top-seeded Liza Pereira and Jennifer Schmidt of Austria lost 5-7, 6-0, 4-6 to Barbara Pocza and Petra Teller of Hungary in the doubles final of the $10,000 ITF women's circuit tennis tournament in Tlemcen, Algeria.

Liza and partner had beaten Sana Ben Salah of Algeria and Isabel Collischon of Germany 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals after thrashing Rawya Seif of Egypt and Eva Valkova of the Czech Republic 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The duo had enjoyed a bye in the first round. In singles, Liza had lost in the pre-quarterfinals.
