Insurance cover likely for rag-pickers

NEW DELHI SEPT. 13. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today declared that the Government would provide gloves, masks and rubber boots to about three lakh rag-pickers. .

Acknowledging the role played by these people, Ms Dikshit informed that the Government was also looking into the possibilities of providing them with some kind of an insurance cover. They had been playing an important role in civic services by segregating and disposing waste and their contribution could be scientifically enhanced in the forthcoming scheme of waste segregation and management, she added.

Speaking at the valedictory session of the third Bhagidari Workshop here today, the Chief Minister, also invited the citizens to inspect, evaluate and supervise the Government's efforts in the field of cleanliness, sanitation and road repair, by coming out daily in their localities during the forthcoming "Clean Delhi Campaign'' starting September 23.

Speaking on the occasion, the Delhi Chief Secretary, Shailaja Chandra said the Government was serious about garbage segregation and disposal and such "Bhagidari Workshops" were aimed at training and sensitising people through Bhagidari groups like RWAs and MTAs. These groups could act as resource person for training and making society responsible and responsive as a whole.

Efforts would be made through non-government organisations and government agencies to train and sensitise "safai karmacharis'' as well.
