New Delhi
By Our Staff Reporter
The programme was launched by Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, today by administering pulse polio drops to several children at her official residence in the city. Expressing satisfaction that only three cases of polio had been reported in the Capital this year compared to 24 last year, she said: "We will continue these efforts till the number of polio cases fall to zero. Parents with children below five years must ensure that their children are given the required pulse polio drops. They must also encourage their neighbours so that no child is deprived of these drops." Under the programme over 7,000 Polio Kendras have been set up in hospitals, dispensaries, schools, community centres, anganwadi centres, nursing homes and private institutions all over the city. In addition, 300 mobile centres will cover slums, JJ clusters, dwelling units and construction sites. Also, 65 teams have been deployed at transit points like railway stations, inter-State bus terminus, airports, entertainment centres, State entry points to administer pulse polio drops to travelling children. All centres would be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. "Polio does not differentiate between the poor and the rich or in terms of caste and religion and so all those children who do not get the required pulse polio drops are at the risk of being afflicted by this disease," said the Delhi Health and Family Welfare Minister, A.K. Walia. He added that the drops were completely safe and countries the world over had become polio-free by administering these drops.
