PM to consider request for convening Cauvery meet

CHENNAI Sept. 13. The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has agreed to consider the DMK president, M. Karunanidhi's request for convening the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) at the earliest. The Prime Minister had assured him that he would consult the Chief Ministers of the Cauvery basin States soon after returning to Delhi and call for the CRA meeting, Mr. Karunanidhi told newsmen after meeting Mr. Vajpayee at the Apollo Hospital here today.

Mr. Karunanidhi said he had apprised the Prime Minister of the plight of the delta farmers owing to non-release of water from the Cauvery. Mr. Vajpayee had told him that he would take necessary steps in this connection. No other issues were discussed at the meeting.

PM calls on Maran

Earlier, the Prime Minister called on the ailing Union Minister, Murasoli Maran, who was readmitted to the hospital here after being brought from the Methodist Hospital in Houston in the U.S. Mr. Karunanidhi said Mr. Maran responded to the Prime Minister's call.

Later, Mr. Vajpayee enquired about the treatment being given to Mr. Maran. After about 30 minutes at the hospital, Mr. Vajpayee left for the Raj Bhavan.

The Prime Minister, who was accompanied by the Union Ministers, T.R. Baalu, S. Tirunavukarasar, and Pon. Radhakrishnan, and the BJP national secretary, L. Ganesan, was received at the hospital by Mr. Karunanidhi, the DMK general secretary, M.K. Stalin, the Union Minister of State for Health, A. Raja and the chairman of the hospital, Pratap C. Reddy.
