Tamil Nadu's A. Anitcham throws the shot put to a new National record distance in the girls' under-16 event in the National inter-zonal junior athletic championship at Bhopal on Sunday. Right: Simaranjit Singh of Punjab, who set a new meet record in the junior men's under-20 discus event.
The track showed several water patches, rendering it heavy to run on, while the shot put and discus pits got slippery under the wet conditions. Still, shot putter A. Anitcham of Tamil Nadu got the better of National Record with a heave of 11.61 metres in the girls' under-16 category. Anitcham got past the National Record on her third attempt when she achieved the distance of 11.60m. After fouling her fourth, the tenth standard student of MAM Higher Secondary School, Kottaiyur, bettered her own mark by 0.01 metres. The old mark stood in the name of Aplesh, who set it last year in Kolkata. It was Anitcham's second gold of the championship, after having won the discus event on Saturday. Anitcham virtually had no competition on Sunday. The rest of the competitors even failed to touch the 10m distance. Goa's Steffi Cardozo (9.78) and Punjab's Manpreet Kaur (9.24) settled for silver and bronze medals respectively. The only other new record came through Punjab's Simranjeet Singh, in the junior men (under-20) discus event. Simranjeet was way behind the National mark of 56.14 metres, but had the consolation of setting a new meet record. Simranjeet's fifth throw of 51.62m placed him comfortably on the top of the board among the eight competitors. With this effort, Simranjeet bettered his own mark of 51.35m, set in Kolkata in 2002. "Rain spoiled my day completely. I wanted to attack the 55-metre but the pit was slippery and I couldn't grip the plate properly,'' Simranjeet said. On the track, Uttar Pradesh's Vishal Saxena failed in his bid to complete the golden sprint double. Clearly, the heavy track affected his run as Anmol Ratantee of Jharkhand pushed remarkably well in the last 20 metres. Ratantete clocked 22.01 seconds to win the Junior men 200m dash. He was followed by Tamil Nadu's A. Arvind (22.04) and Maharashtra's Syed Shoiab (22.10). Saxena, the 100m champion, finished a poor fifth clocking 22.30 seconds. In the new event, Octathlon, for boys' under-18, Karnataka's Mohan G. K. triumphed with a score of 4706 points. Bhupender Singh (4186) of Rajasthan and Satbir Kumar (3896) of Jharkhand won the silver and bronze medals respectively. The results: Junior men (under-20): 200m: 1. Anmol Ratantete (Jhar) 22.01s; 2.
