First POTA case against woman naxal

By Our Staff Reporter

ADILABAD SEPT. 14. The Adilabad district police has filed the first POTA case against a woman squad member of the People's War along with a former deputy dalam commander.

This is said to be the first POTA case against a woman naxal in the North Telangana district. The Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagwat, addressed a press conference at Nirmal and paraded before newsmen the arrested woman squad member, Kanti Lingavva alias Vanitakka, and another former extremist Balini Kamlakar alias Ajay. The two were picked up from a house in Nirmal town. Ajay was the deputy dalam commander of Boath squad and surrendered in 1999.

The SP said Vanitakka, resident of Laxmisagar village in Kadam mandal, joined the PW in 1997 and worked in the Singapur, Chennur, Boath squads, the PGA 7th platoon and the Jana Natya Mandali. During her stint with the squads, she committed five murders and escaped from a couple of exchanges of fire. She was responsible for the killing of the Khanapur sarpanch, Vilas Rao Deshpande, in 1997.

She carried out the murder of a teacher, Chinna Reddy, in Nirmal mandal. She was involved in three other killings of a postmaster of Patnapur village and a constable in Boath mandal and one Made Gouraiah of Agarguda village in June this year. The SP said Vanitakka reportedly came to Nirmal town to hand over some money to the relatives of her husband, Bhaskar, who is the District Committee member. She apparently got in touch with Ajay and asked his sister, Bittu Rambai, to bring her to Nirmal from Kagaznagar forest. Accordingly, Rambai, escorted her to Nirmal.

The police nabbed Vanitakka and Ajay along with Rambai. While the police filed POTA cases against Vanitakka and Ajay, Rambai was sent to judicial custody under the APPS Act. Ajay was accused of harbouring a member of a terrorist organisation knowingly.
