At a press conference here on Sunday, the Superintendent of Police, Soumya Mishra, said that the gang was arrested after an inquiry into the racket on the basis of an anonymous letter she received a few days ago. She said Nadimenti Ramesh (27) of Basangi Village in Jiyyammavalasa mandal, Mudda Venkata Ramana (24) of Nadimikalla village of Veeraghattam mandal of Srikakulam district and Manem Purushottam (52) of New Colony in Visakhapatnam were supplied these fake certificates in collusion with the main accused, Sambangi Gowrinaidu of Krishnapalli village in Parvathipuram mandal, who is at large. The Superintendent of Police has announced a reward to those who pass on information to the police on the whereabouts of Gowrinaidu. The SP said that Manem Purushottam used to collect certificate forms from late N.S.N. Reddy, a junior assistant in Andhra University, and supply the forged certificates through Ramesh and Venkata Ramana to students who had failed in matriculation, PUC and degree courses after collecting Rs.500 to Rs.3,000 for each certificate. So far, Ramesh alone had supplied about 70 to 80 fake certificates to students in the three north coastal districts and also in East Godavari district, the SP said. Soumya Mishra said that six students were arrested for continuing higher education with the help of fake certificates. One student is studying M.A. (Sociology) in Andhra University. The arrested students are: Jonnada Sridevi, Jonnada Sailatha and Jonnada Ramesh (all belonging to one family) of Nirmala Colony in Parvathipuram, Samala Suresh Kumar of Basangi village in Jiyyammavalasa mandal, Yarrapothula Vasudeva Rao, Kothavalasa (Parvathipuram) and Bitrapati Manoj Kumar of Kallikota village in Komarada mandal. Jonnada Sridevi secured a fake Intermediate certificate from Sambangi Gowrinaidu and joined Parvathipuram degree college in 1999. After failing in first and second year B.A. degree examination again she secured a fake degree certificate and joined M.A. (Sociology) in Andhra University, Dr. Mishra said.
