TRS for Krishna river valley authority

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Sept. 14. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti on Sunday demanded that the Government take steps to constitute an independent Krishna River Valley authority to govern the water releases from Krishna river to different states as well as regions.

In the light of the Centre's decision to constitute a new tribunal for river water distribution, the TRS also demanded that the Government convene an all-party meeting to discuss the modalities for presenting the State's case before the tribunal. "There should be no further delay in calling for an all-party meeting for discussing the river water distribution issues. The Government should also pressure the Centre for implementation of scheme B of the Bachawat award, which is the only solution to mitigate the water shortages faced by Andhra Pradesh,'' the TRS president, K Chandrasekhar Rao, said.

Addressing a press conference here, he said that the Government did not press for the scheme B for Bachawat award since it is using surplus waters from the Krishna. However, the situation has changed now as the neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra are also utilising their due share of water from the Krishna and hence the Government cannot demand the implementation of the scheme B.

``Instead of working out ways to tide over the crisis permanently, the Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, is indulging in cheap politics by criticising Karnataka and Maharashtra. But implementation of Scheme B is the only solution to the problems faced by the State,'' he said adding that towards this end, the Government should take all the opposition parties into confidence by convening an all-party meeting.
