Soon, the CCTV will be installed in all other trains running in the State, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Railways), Rajvir Prathap Sharma, told The Hindu. He said the Railway Police had been able to apprehend smugglers of narcotics and electronic goods with the help of images beamed by hidden cameras installed in trains. Explaining the reason for installing the CCTV, he said: "Trains carry various material for crime and criminals.'' The system would also help in taking action against those playing cards, consuming liquor, and smoking in trains. To improve security at railway stations, the Railway Police would install metal detectors at important railway stations in the State. Dr. Sharma said there was also a proposal to have a video surveillance system at the Bangalore City Railway Station and other important stations. Further, to improve the communication system of the Railway Police, policemen were being provided with "manpack sets,'' which had a better range than walkie-talkies. These sets, with a range of 25 km., would be tuned to the local police communication network.
