dated September 16, 1953: Wishing Andhra Well

Editorial: The formal inauguration of Andhra State fixed for October 1st is occasion for rejoicing not only for the Andhras, and all men of goodwill who welcome the removal of frustration, and hope for the release of the creative energies and the generous enthusiasms of the Andhras, a cultured people, with a magnificent past. Administrative arrangements have been proceeding in a smooth manner. There had been doubt if the political situation would permit a stable and united Ministry taking charge from the outset. Speculation had gone so far as to suggest a short period of Governor's Rule. However, there will be relief by the latest developments. Mr. T. Prakasam enjoys among Andhra leaders unique position due to his intrepid character, great sacrifices, and hold on the imagination of the masses. Though he left the Congress some time ago, his services to the country cannot be forgotten. He has led the Praja Socialists for some time, but it is difficult to identify him with narrowly exclusive party allegiances. The P.S.P. has shown sound political common sense in making it possible for him to accept the leadership of the new Government on the basis of a democratic coalition. The need for all democratic elements coming, together is indispensable of Andhra to enjoy a peaceful and stable Government. When Mr. Prakasam entered into alliance with the Communists, we deplored the blunder. He discovered he had been a little too confident in thinking the leopard could change its spots and promptly abjured the alliance. The politics he and his party have since pursued have not shown and deep divergence of principle with the Congress.
