This Day That Age
Pre-jubilee celebrations of the Sadvidya Sanjivin Patasala at Sringeri started by the late Sankaracharya Sri Narasimha Bharathi in August 1895, to arrest decay and deterioration in Vedic learning and practice, came off in the Sri Sankara Mutt. Recitations, dialogues, and speeches were given by students and vidwans of the Patasala. Mr. S. Ranganatha Sastri presided and their Holinesses the Jagadgurus of the Sri Sringeri Math blessed the gathering and the 85 residential students studying Kavya and other branches in the Math. His Holiness the Junior Jagadguru Sri Bharathi Tirtha spoke in Kannada, taking two slokas of Siva Mahimna Sastra as the text of his speech. His Holiness said the illustrious orbs get their power from Paramatma who permeates all of the universe in His chaitanya swaroopa; creation consisted of millions of orbs more resplendent than the Moon, the Sun, or Agni. A recital of the various stotras and mantras describing the greatness of Paramatma purified the mind and intellect. No proper and correct learning could be imparted to students without observing the prescribed samskaras. Hindu law givers had prescribed 48 samaskaras most essential to achieve purification of the body and the mind. Performing the samskaras also developed discipline and a strong character.
