Tamil Nadu is overall champion

By Our Sports Reporter

BHOPAL SEPT. 15. Triple-jumper A. Amudha and javelin thrower S. Saraswathi clinched crucial gold medals at the fag end of the day as Tamil Nadu outpointed Uttar Pradesh for the overall title, in the 15th National inter-zonal junior athletics championship here on Monday.

Both Amudha and Saraswathi won their respective events in the junior women's (under-20) category, which helped swell Tamil Nadu's tally to 19 gold medals, two more than Uttar Pradesh. Tamil Nadu collected 19 gold, 9 silver and 18 bronze medals, while Uttar Pradesh tallied 17 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze medals. Haryana (11-10-6) took the third position.

Thanks to its women power, Tamil Nadu was able to best the North Zone champion, Uttar Pradesh. Also, the absence of Kerala affected the final outcome of the team championship. For some inexplicable reason the Kerala team failed to arrive here. Otherwise, it surely would have had its share of medals, affecting the overall position.

Steady rain for the second day dampened the hopes of track athletes. The organisers also hurried through the events to keep up to the timing given to the chief guest. Sadly, the organisers were indifferent towards the boys and girls in the under-14 category. The sub-junior athletes were kept waiting endlessly for the team titles to be awarded.

On the last day of the meet, just one National record was bettered. Uttar Pradesh's Shahnawaz Khan hurled the hammer to 63.64 metres against the standing record of 61.34m set by Anoop Singh of Rajasthan in 2002.

On the track, Jharkhand's Anmol Ratan Tete won the junior men's (under-20) 400m race, clocking 48.34 seconds. Haryana's Parmod Kumar (48.63) and Maharashtra's Sayed Shoiab (49.94) settled for silver and bronze respectively.

In the quartermile race for junior women, Bengal's Shilpi Dhali rallied to beat the frontrunners. With just 10 metres remaining for the finish, Shilpi trailed behind C. Bhuvneshwari and Harini C. Sekar, but the Bengal runner pushed herself hard to cross the line in 57.05 seconds. Bhuvneshwari (57.15) and Harini (57.53) finished second and third respectively.

To a larger extent, the experiment of the Amateur Athletic Federation of India (AAFI), to have athletes represent their respective States in the individual events, has succeeded. Earlier, there had been hardly any interest shown by State coaches in the National inter-zonals, but this time the change brought about keen participation.
