No ties with Cong. for polls, says Mayawati

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW Sept. 15. The Bahujan Samaj Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, today rejected suggestions that her party had entered into negotiations with the Congress to formalise an understanding during the Assembly elections in the country later this year.

Talking to newspersons here, she said that speculations about the BSP entering into an electoral alliance with the Congress were without any basis.

Her party rally held in Jaipur on Sunday had attracted more crowds than the rally addressed by the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, at the same venue recently, she claimed adding that the coming Assembly elections in Rajasthan would throw "startling results."

Stating that she did not consider the Bharatiya Janata Party as an enemy, Ms. Mayawati said that if the BJP leaders "realised their mistakes and repented" for what they had done to her in the recent past, she would have no problem in having an understanding with the party.

However, no contact had been established between her party and the BJP after their alliance in the State had come to an end.

Replying to a question, she said the BJP should not act in haste over its demand for the construction of the Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya. Every one should wait till the pronouncement of the court verdict. Raking up the temple issue could disturb communal harmony and should be avoided, she added.
