Police fire in air to disperse students

By Our Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI SEPT. 15. The police today fired five rounds in the air to disperse students who indulged in stone-throwing and smashed government and private vehicles here. Two SIs and a head constable were injured and nearly a dozen vehicles, including a police van, were damaged.

Some students were said to have been taken into custody and police pickets were posted on the campus to prevent any backlash.

An uneasy calm is prevailing on the 1000-acre sprawling university campus which remained tense right from morning in the wake of demonstrations by students.

Trouble began on the campus when students picketed the university's administrative office, denouncing the top-brass' alleged callous attitude towards their long-pending issues regarding the release of unpaid EPP scholarships, cancellation of term fees, deflating the enhanced establishment charges, tackling the acute drinking water scarcity in the hostels and so on.
