Sourav shocks Raman

Sourav Chakraborty who ousted top-seeded S. Raman in the National-ranking South Zone table tennis championship in Chennai on Monday.

CHENNAI SEPT. 15. Whenever the two have met, the contest has gone to the wire. The men's quarterfinal of the RMK Engineering College National-ranking South Zone table tennis championships at the Nehru Indoor Stadium here on Monday, between players of two generations — 18-year-old Sourav Chakraborty (RSPB) and the top seed, 34-year-old S. Raman (PSPB), was no different. Playing a relatively error-free game in the seventh and deciding game, Sourav edged out the veteran paddler 11-13, 11-7, 4-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-5, 11-6.

The final game was closely contested till 6-6, and from there, Sourav went to a 9-6 lead as Raman made some unforced errors, and a forehand mistake gave Sourav a well earned win.

"I am very happy with this win, since Raman was in tremendous form after winning the National championship. Basically, I tried to put the ball in and moreover Raman was not covering the deep forehand shots and I exposed it," said Sourav, who has high regards for Raman. "He (and Chetan P. Baboor) have helped me a lot. Raman is a nice human being."

Top-seeded N.R. Indu (PSPB), after a come-from-behind victory over Kanchan Basak (PSPB) in the third round in six games, was in ominous form in the quarterfinals as she scripted a comfortable 11-7, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9, 11-3 victory over Nandita Saha (RSPB) in the quarterfinals.

In a major upset in the women's section, fourth-seeded T. Pradeepa (PSPB) bowed out to qualifier Jhanavi Deshpande of Maharashtra 8-11, 12-14, 8-11, 11-3, 7-11 in the second round. Ranabir Das of RSPB put it across second-seeded Subhajit Saha Sr. (PSPB) 17-15, 11-9, 12-10, 11-5 in the quarterfinals.
