Rupee edges up

MUMBAI SEPT. 15. The rupee ended mildly higher against the U.S. currency today after heavy dollar demand from corporates and importers wiped out most of the sharp early rupee gains, which took it to new three-year peak in volatile trading at the interbank foreign exchange market. Closing at 45.79/80 a dollar, a paisa gain from last Friday's close of 45.80/81, the rupee initially spurted past the 45.75 a dollar barrier and peaked to 45.73/74, boosted by strong weekend dollar supplies. It opened on a firm footing at 45.76/78.

The Reserve Bank of India fixed the reference rate for the U.S. currency at Rs. 45.77.and for the single European unit at Rs. 51.51.
