Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By R. Ravikanth Reddy
The municipality sanctioned Rs.3 crores as a part of the first phase for which the work will begin in a few days and it is likely to be completed within six months. The second phase will begin after the completion of the first phase. The total estimated cost of the project is around Rs.9 crores. The first phase is being taken up in three packages at a cost of Rs. 6.5 crores. Under the first package of the first phase, two pipes of 2,000 mm diametre, running parallel, will be laid from Chaitanyapuri bridge to Sankeshwar Bazar. In the second package, a pipe will be laid from P & T Colony linking it to the veer near Sankeshwar Bazar. In the third package, another pipe will be laid from P & T Colony connecting it to the nala near Shivaganga theatre. ``This has been the dream of the residents here and once it is completed there will be no fear of area being flooded'', says, Baddam Subash Reddy, Chairman, Gaddiannaram municipality. "It was one of my election promises and I have fulfil it within one year''. Residents of about 16 colonies under threat from floodwaters will be relieved with this project. The areas used to get flooded due to the inflows from Saidabad and Midhani area. The worst affected colonies like Gautamnagar, New Gaddiannaram, Krishnanagar and Vivekanandanagar will benefit after the completion of the first phase. Under the second phase, a 1600 diameter pipe will be laid from Sharada talkies on the existing nala which will be connected to Chaitanyapuri nala. The estimated cost of second phase is Rs.2.5 crores. Mr. Reddy says funds for the project are being generated internally from the savings of Government grants given for development of municipalities in the State apart from its revenues. "Most of our area is well developed, so we can concentrate on this nala'', Mr. Reddy says. Gaddiannaram has stood first among all the municipalities in the State according to a survey taken up by the State Government taking into consideration the implementation of various schemes and development, he says.
