Letters to the Editor
Sir, The comment by the Israel Deputy Prime Minister that "killing Arafat is an option" ( Sept. 15 ) reflects the country's hawkish approach towards the Palestinian crisis. Who should lead them is a choice that has to be made by the Palestinian people, not Israel. The statement of the Israeli Government amounts to declaring assassination as a legitimate political weapon. As for India, it is hard to see how, either in principle or in terms of realpolitik, it will gain anything by aligning with such an extreme political force as represented by Ariel Sharon and his Likud party.
Prasenjit Sen,
