Gang held for offering blessings for money

Pondicherry Sept. 16. Four `saffron-clad' persons, who were collecting money from residents here, chanting slokas and "blessing" them, were arrested yesterday.

They managed to net about Rs. 30,000. People contributed as much as Rs. 12,000-15,000. Rajagopal, Pandurangan, Munirathnam and Devendran, hailing from Arakkonam, used to introduce themselves as coming from a Kancheepuram-based mutt and seek ghee as contribution for their `blessings', the Superintendent of Police, V.J. Chandran, said. If the residents expressed inability in making a contribution, they demanded cash.
