`Devise strategies to help farmers to face challenges'

Pondicherry Sept. 16. The Development Commissioner, B. Vijayan, has called upon experts in farm technology to come out with strategies to enable farmers to face the challenges.

Inaugurating a two-day annual review meeting of the ICAR-sponsored Krishi Vigyan Kendras' Technology Transfer centres attached to the Zone Eight (headquartered at Bangalore), here today, Mr. Vijayan, who is also the chairman of the Society of the Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Krishi Vigyan Kendra, said agriculture constituted 25 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product and 66 per cent of the population depended on agriculture. Despite these, the growth rate during the last two decades had come down from 4 to 2.5 per cent. There were States like Pondicherry, where negative growth rate had been recorded. .Mr. Vijayan launched a bilingual web site of the KVK here (www.pondiccherrykvk.org) .
