The committee to select candidates for this year's award, headed by the Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Rani Satish, met here today. The selection process is likely to be completed by the third week of October and the awards will be presented on November 1. Ms. Satish told The Hindu that the selection committee would submit a list of deserving candidates to the Government for the final decision. The committee would prepare the list on the basis of merit and age. Lobbying would not be entertained, she added. Sources said the committee had received 1,085 applications as against 700 applications it received last year. The Directorate of Kannada and Culture was using special software to screen the applications. The committee would obtain a list of persons from six of its 10 academies and also the Kannada Development Authority for including it in the "preliminary list," sources added. The committee discussed modalities to be adopted for selecting candidates for the award. The selection process was mired in controversy last year. The committee was forced to shift its venue from the Kannada Bhavan to an unknown place for its final meeting owing to interference, both public and political.
