Rs. 10-cr. soon for procuring ragi, maize

BANGALORE Sept. 16. The Karnataka Government will soon release Rs. 10 crores for procurement of ragi and maize in the State.

The Minister for Agriculture Marketing, B.S. Patil Sasnur, told presspersons here today that a State-level committee, which met here under the chairmanship of the Development Commissioner, Vijay Gore, had decided to commence procurement immediately.

Mr. Sasnur said the Karnataka State Food and Civil Supplies Corporation had been entrusted with the task of procuring ragi and maize and the Karnataka Oil Federation had been asked to procure sunflower, and soyabean. He said production of these four commodities had increased considerably this year and the Government had decided to procure the produce immediately.

Mr. Sasnur said a market intervention scheme had been finalised for 2003-04. The process of identifying procurement centres for onion, potato, maize, ragi, sunflower and soyabean had been completed.Mr. Sasnur said the State Marketing Federation would start commercial operations wherever there was deficit production. Efforts would be made to help stabilise the price of such commodities.

The Minister said that the Development Commissioner had been authorised to release Rs. 1 crore each to the districts and place it at the disposal of procuring agencies.

Two more farmers end life

Meanwhile, two farmers — one each in Hassan and Bijapur districts — reportedly committed suicide on Tuesday taking the toll of such cases to 121 since August 1.

Puttaswamy Gowda (36) of Hurulikopplu of Duddahobli in Hassan taluk ended his life by consuming poison as he reportedly found it difficult to clear loans he had borrowed from a private moneylender.

Parusuram Mashal (26) is said to have jumped into a well in his fields and died, at Halaginal in Tikota Police limits in Bijapur district, according to the Additional Superintendent of Police, Vidyasagar.
