The group had taken away a vault containing the valuables and the cash from the Thiruchitrambalam Primary Agricultural Cooperative Bank, making a hole in the rear wall on September 4. The accused were identified as N.Sivakumar (26), K.Saravanan (30) and Diesel Palani alias G.Palani (37), all hailing from Ramanathapuram. The police also retrieved the vault and a car used by the robbers. The lead came in the form of a box, containing two sovereigns of jewellery, found in a cashew grove. Saravanan hid some jewellery beneath a platform meant for washing clothes. Sivakumar put some valuables in a vessel and kept it on an attic, while Diesel Palani hid jewellery in a television set. Based on their confession, the vault was fished out from a 30-foot water source in a quarry at Seymangalam. The police said one of the accused removed numbered tags attached to the jewels and set them on fire at the Ranganathapuram graveyard. A partly burnt tag, attached to a gold chain, provided the vital clue. The police said most of the jewels belonged to the economically-weaker people, who had pledged them.
