Environment-friendly air-conditioned coach

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI SEPT. 16. The Southern Railway's Perambur workshop has modified an air-conditioned coach with a refrigerant free from harmful chorine substance that affects the ozone layer.

According to a railway press release, one of the major substances that cause the ozone layer depletion is the cloroflurocarbon refrigerant used in the old AC coaches of the railways. In Southern Railway, there are about 200 such coaches.

The World Health Organisation, in the Montreal protocol in 1996, called for an end to the use of the harmful refrigerant by 2010. As a pilot project, the Perambur workshop had modified one of the coaches free from this harmful refrigerant
