Orissa
By Our Staff Reporter
A memorandum in this regard was submitted to a Central team, which was here on Monday, to assess the damages caused by the floods in the Mahanadi and other rivers. The floods affected 23 districts and claimed 60 human lives. Meanwhile, the Orissa Gana Parishad president, Bijay Mohapatra, demanded special measures for farmers who lost their houses and crop in the floods. An interest-free loan of Rs. 10,000 should be given to the farmers, he said. Mr. Mohapatra said the Government should take steps to strengthen the embankments in the Mahanadi system to cope with the heavy floods and construct barrages on the tributaries of the Mahanadi.
