JAMMU SEPT. 16. A commander of the Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen, Nazir Mohd Khan, was shot dead by men of the Hizb-ul Mujahideen (Babar group) in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

Sources said the bullet-riddled body of Nazir, a resident of Kaskoot, Banihal, was recovered by police from the Mahu Mangat area.

Nazir had played a key role in the formation of the Hizb-ul Mujahideen, Pir Panchal.

He was one of the first local recruits to militancy. In 1989, he went to Pakistan for training and later operated in the Udhampur-Doda belt.

He was with the Hizb from 1990 to 1998. In 1994, he again went to Pakistan and was an instructor in one of the training camps.

Nazir's killing is reported to be the handiwork of the Hizb militant, Baber Bakerwal.

The two groups frequently blamed each other for passing on information to the security forces, leading to casualties on both sides.

Hideouts busted

PTI, UNI report from Srinagar:

Security forces today busted two hideouts of the Pakistan-based Jaish-e- Mohammad in downtown Srinagar and five others in different areas of the State and recovered a huge cache of arms and explosives.

Acting on specific information, BSF personnel and police raided the hideouts at Gogwara-Nowhatta and recovered two carbines, a sten gun, 47 grenades, four wireless sets — one fitted with an IED — eight 60 mm mortar shells, a camouflage dress, a drilling machine and IED communication kits, a BSF spokesman said.
