Opposition misleading people: Kharge

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE SEPT. 16. Objecting to the allegations levelled by the Opposition parties on farmers' suicide, the Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, said here on Tuesday that the Opposition was "misusing" the statistics provided by the State Government.

He told presspersons here that the statistics provided by the Government on suicide since 1996 had been used by the Opposition to create a wrong impression in the mind of the public.

Likening the Opposition to Goebbels, the Publicity Minister of Hitler, Mr. Kharge said: "Goebbels managed to convince the public by repeating lies." He said farmers need not fear that they would be left in the lurch. The Government was committed to their welfare.

Pointing to the meeting of experts convened by the Government on Monday, he said the Government was working out packages and policies for their welfare.

About the investigation into the stamp paper racket, Mr. Kharge said the Government was satisfied with the progress made by the police.

Reiterating the Government's stand that it would not hand over the probe to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), he said the police were doing a good job.

He said the accused had been charge-sheeted and a special court had been set up to try him. The High Court had agreed to appoint a judge to this court, and the Government would soon appoint the public prosecutor.

About the operations to arrest the outlaw, Veerappan, the Minister said the police had been doing their best.

"The Government is not briefing the media on day-to-day developments as it is an ongoing operation without a timeframe," he said.

Earlier, Mr. Kharge released Ambedkar Research Volume edited by Ma. Na. Javaraiah. He lamented the growing superstition in society. Urging Dalits not to lodge frivolous and false complaints under the Untouchability Act, he said such complaints would create animosity between Dalits and others.

The function was organised by Buddha-Basava-Ambedkar Vedike.

The Minister for Higher Education, G. Parameshwara, was present.
