Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said it had been decided to award compensation in nine cases. Compensation in the remaining cases would be finalised soon. Compensation had been paid in two cases so far, he added. On the delay in settling the crop insurance claims of farmers, he said that there was "some problem" with 25 per cent of the claims and the Government had sought a report from the district administration. The report would be sent soon. He said that nearly 2,500 farmers had submitted crop insurance claims this year, as against 5,000 farmers in the previous year. To a question on drought relief works in the district, he said works were going on with 5,600 tonnes of foodgrains being lifted so far. However, the district required 10,000 tonnes of foodgrains to meet the demand, he added. To comply with the direction of the Government, a district-level committee consisting of the Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, the Assistant Commissioners, the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat and the Managing Director of the District Central Cooperative Bank had been set up to monitor the implementation of relief package to farmers announced by the Government recently, he said. He said that the district administration would make efforts to create confidence among farmers who were facing problems due to drought. A relief centre had been set up at the Jeevanadhara Kendra to listen to and solve problems being faced by farmers, he added. He warned private moneylenders that action would be initiated against them if they charged more than the stipulated 16 per cent rate of interest on loans. He said that as private moneylenders had been asked not to carry out loan recovery for one year, they could not attach the property of farmers against their loans.
