Awards presented to animal welfare activists

CHENNAI SEPT. 16. The People for Animals (PfA) presented the PfA Jaigopal Garodia Animal Welfare Awards 2003 for the second year, recognising the commitment of people in different walks of life towards the cause of animals.

The awards carrying a citation signed by Maneka Gandhi, a gold-plated silver medal and a cash prize.

Participating at a function sponsored by the Jaigopal Garodia Foundation, Supriya Sahu, Joint Secretary, Health, commended the PfA and Jaigopal Garodia Foundation for highlighting the contributions of the awardees and for instilling compassion and respect for life among school children.

H.L. Attri, Director, Animal Welfare, Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, appreciated the State Government and the Chennai Police for their support and sensitivity towards the cause of animals.

P.N. Prakash, Special Public Prosecutor, Madras High Court also spoke. The PfA Jaigopal Garodia Animal Welfare Awards 2003 were given to Sylendra Babu, Joint Commissioner of Police, North Chennai, for his efforts to uphold the laws and protect animals and for taking action to stop illegal inter-state cattle trafficking. He donated the cash to the PfA.

Kiran Singh, former Deputy Director General, Indian Council for Agricultural Research, New Delhi, received the Scientist for Animals Award for his efforts at humanising science. P. Oppili, senior reporter, The Hindu, received the Scribe for Animals Award for his efforts at highlighting issues concerning animals.

Priyadarshini Govind, veterinarian, was the recipient of the Young Veterinarian for Animals Award for relieving pain and suffering of animals. Nigel Otter, IPAN, Ooty, received the Animal Activist Award for protecting wildlife in the Nilgiris Biosphere. K. Mahesh, Advocate, received the Advocate for Animals Award for his efforts at bringing animal rights offenders to book and T. Abidha, caretaker, Vandalur Zoo, was given the Care of the Wild Award for her care of orphaned young wild animals.

Shiranee Pereira, Honorary Secretary, PfA, Chennai, spoke.
