Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Divya Ramamurthi
According to an official of the transport department, share autorickshaws carrying beyond their capacity would be levied a fine. The transport department decided to come down heavily on public carriers not paying taxes, said the official. In a three-day random check of omni buses and taxis, the department found several carriers not paying passenger tax. Eighty-seven taxis have been detained for not paying taxes. "Some of the taxis were private ones with no permits but were engaged in transporting passengers," said the official. There were also cases of omnibuses registered in Pondicherry operating services in Chennai without paying the passenger tax here. The transport department has estimated a loss of Rs. 4.5 lakhs due to non-payment of these taxes.
