Lawyers can appear before lok adalats

Bangalore Sept. 17. The Karnataka State Bar Council Chairman, H.C. Shivaramu, on Wednesday said that lawyers were free to appear before lok adalats or any legal aid camp conducted by the Legal Services Authority as the High Court of Karnataka had stayed the resolution of the Bar Council of India passed in October last.

Mr. Shivaramu told presspersons that the system of lok adalats headed by a High Court or District Judge at the State or district-level, respectively was working well.

The new system introduced by the Union Government envisaged creation of lok adalats headed by a retired district judge and two members nominated by the State Government.

Instead, Mr. Shivaramu said that the three members, including the chairpersons, could be appointed from among lawyers.

This would also help lawyers. Another lacuna was that there was no provision for an appeal, which was constitutional. There should be provision for one appeal at least, he added.
