CM to lead seven-member team to Karnataka

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Sept. 18. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, will head a seven-member delegation of his Government when he meets his Karnataka counterpart, S. M. Krishna, at Bangalore on September 20 to resolve the row over sharing of Krishna waters.

The meeting between the two Chief Ministers, the first-ever such concerted effort to break the raging dispute ever since Andhra Pradesh objected to Karnataka's attempt to increase the height of the Alamatti dam, is scheduled at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Mr. Naidu will be accompanied by the Minister for Major Irrigation, Kadiam Srihari, the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, and at least four other senior irrigation officials and engineers and will return to Hyderabad the same evening.

The Chief Minister, who returned here on Thursday at the end of his six-day foreign tour, has convened a meeting tomorrow with senior Ministers and officials to discuss his Government's strategy for his discussions with Mr. Krishna which will primarily centre around the quantity of water that Karnataka is willing to release from the Alamatti reservoir and whether it will demand power from AP in exchange.

Andhra Pradesh has requested Karnataka to release 50 tmcft of water to save the standing crop in Krishna delta but there is no response from the latter.

The hopes of receiving at least 30 tmcft after Mr. Srihari's visit to Bangalore earlier this month were dashed when Karnataka did not come with any specific response.
