IA launches special package for Sharjah-bound tourists

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Sept. 18. In its bid to tap the outbound tourism potential from the country, Indian Airlines, in association with the Sharjah Government, has launched a six-month special holiday package for promoting Sharjah as a holiday destination.

The holiday package, which is being offered from September 15 as part of Indian Airlines' golden jubilee celebrations, was launched here on Thursday through a road show by representatives of the Sharjah Government and Indian Airlines. The package price ranging from Rs.14,770 at the lowest to Rs.23,495 at the highest for a three-day, two-night stay has been designed for travel commencing from Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Bangalore and Chennai where similar road shows are being held.

The holiday package is re-inclusive of return airfares in economy class, hotel accommodation on `bed and breakfast' basis in a selected range of 3 to 5 star hotels and airport transfers. The visa charges are included in packages meant for stay up to three nights. For packages involving a stay of more than three nights, the visa charges would be extra. Other exciting options like desert safari, scuba diving and sight seeing could be included in the package at an additional cost.

Addressing the media, the Indian Airlines Area Marketing Manager, K. Surender Reddy, said that Sharjah has emerged as Indian Airlines' hub in the Middle East and the Gulf with IA operating as many as 26 flights a week to Sharjah by linking the Emirates directly to 13 Indian cities— Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calicut, Coimbatore, Kochi, Chennai, Trichy, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Goa, Amritsar, Lucknow and Delhi.

He said that a 15-20 per cent rise in the passenger traffic to Sharjah is expected in the coming months because the package fare is very economical.

The Director of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, Mohamed Al Norman, said that the package is aimed at stimulating tourism and described the Emirates as a safe, family-oriented destination. Outlining the various tourist attractions in Sharjah, he said the traveller could choose from a wide range of tourist places from sandy beaches to 22 state-of-the-art museums. He said that UNESCO had named Sharjah as the "cultural capital of the Arab world" in 1998. He said that Sharjah had witnessed a 10 to 15 per cent in tourist arrivals in the last three years from all over the world.

The General Manager of Sharjah Airport Travel Agency (SATA), Hassan Talat, has said that Hyderabad has emerged as an important place in India for Sharjah-bound tourism. He said that the package would be extended beyond six months if it proves successful. Travellers of the holiday package could avail of a special discount coupon at the shopping malls and also at the duty-free shop at Sharjah airport.

SATA, which would be the nodal agency for confirming hotel reservations and visas against the package, have appointed M/s STIC Travels as their GSA in India.

The details of various packages have been hosted on IA's dedicated holidays packages website, www.indianairlinespackages.com. The website also has a visa application form that could be downloaded and has the facility to take hotel reservation requests and provide on-line confirmation. The package price from Delhi per person ranges from Rs.16,340 to Rs.21,305 as against the normal IC fare of Rs.16, 265. The price from Hyderabad ranges from Rs.14,770 to Rs.19,734, against the normal fare of Rs.14,520.
