This Day That Age
In Edinburgh, Scotland, Peter Warlock attending the convention of the International Brotherhood of Magicians created a sensation by performing a remarkable feat of prediction. On the 10th he had recorded news headlines in an envelope which was thoroughly sealed and kept secure from any interference. Warlock said that those headlines would figure in the 10 p.m. news bulletin of the British Broadcasting Corporation to be broadcast on the 17th.The envelope was opened at a civic reception given by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, Sir James Miller, well before the bulletin appeared, and the predicted headlines were prominently pinned up in full view of the guests. A few minutes later they heard the news bulletin and saw Mr. Warlock's five predicted headlines to be correct. Mr. Warlock's forecasts were: the finding of Mrs. Melinda Maclean's car in Lausanne (Switzerland); Mr. John Foster Dulles, the United States Secretary of State, opening the United Nations debate; the lowering of the Bank of England rate; Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru's statement on Korea; and the word Nice in relation to Sir Winston Churchill's visit to the South of France.
