Letters to the Editor
Sir, This is with reference to the news item "U.S. vetoes resolution protecting Arafat" ( Sept. 18 ). On the one hand, the U.S. proposes a road map for peace between Israel and Palestine, and, on the other, vetoes a resolution extending protection to Yasser Arafat. All this shows that the U.S. has no real intention of solving the Israel-Palestine problem and is only playing a double game.
Nupur Prasad,
Sir, The image of Israeli soldiers shooting down a Palestinian child is still haunting us. The recent statement on liquidating Mr. Arafat emanating from the Israeli leadership is a blatant example of Israel's true intentions. While we may need to have ties with Israel in sectors such as defence, we cannot compromise on the core principles of our foreign policy.
Ashish S. Thakare,
Sir, Those who are concerned about the plight of the Palestinians will be greatly disturbed by India's bonhomie with Israel. Our support to the Palestinian cause is based on the principle that Palestine belongs to the Palestinians, and that the Palestinian state should coexist with the Jewish state. Neither biblical myth nor Israel's favour with the West justifies its continued occupation of Palestine.
Jacob George,
