In search of her lost brother

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI SEPT. 19. Twenty four-year-old Alex Ratnasothy was the wanderer in his family. On a trip around the world, he was to return home to England in April. But he never got on to the flight, beginning an endless nightmare for his family. Alex has been missing since February this year.

His sister Anna has spent two months in Nepal looking for her lost brother before she decided to come to New Delhi. Clinging to hope, she says: "I am hoping that he wandered into India and is here somewhere. Our father is Sri Lankan and my mother Irish but he looks Indian. He sent us an e-mail on February 21 telling us that he was going to the Everest Base Camp on a trek. But we haven't heard from him since. We know that he never got there. He got robbed on the way and returned to Kathmandu. He was forced to take a detour to Tumlington and on to Hile. He then went to travel agency to book his ticket home. He told them that he would get his passport and then never came back. After getting robbed I think he wanted to just get out of Nepal. He might have then just wanted to come to India. Since he looks like a local, he could have wandered in unnoticed.''

With his family taking turns to come to Nepal to look for him, Anna believes that he will be found soon. "I think he was not thinking straight after he got robbed and might have decided to come to India. My father came too, but he does not keep very well so he went back. He is clinging to the theory that Alex has lost his memory, but we have checked all the hospitals, prisons and even the psychiatric wards and he is not there. Also he has not withdrawn any money since February 22, so it is slightly improbable that he could be in hospitals without money. I just think after the robbery he could not think straight and might have come here. He managed to survive without money for two weeks in the mountains, so he might have come here,'' she said wistfully.

Offering a reward of Rs. 50,000 for any information on her brother, Anna can be contacted at 9891448547 or at the Irish Embassy on 24626733. Alex is 5ft 10 inches tall and has a tattoo of a Chinese dragon behind his right shoulder.
