Need for forest reorganisation

SRINAGAR SEPT 19. Stressing the need for strengthening surveillance network to save the forests in the state, Jammu and Kashmir Forest Minister, Ghulam Mohiuddin Sofi, today proposed reorganisation and rationalisation of existing forest division particularly those spread over large areas.

Given their large sizes the department is facing difficulties to contain timber smuggling, Sofi said addressing a meeting of forest officers convened to review enumeration of fallen trees.

He asked principal chief conservator forests to start the preliminary survey in this regard and furnish a proposal to be submitted for cabinet approval.

Pointing out that there were less takers for C and B class timber in concessional zones, the minister directed the authorities to sell only a class timber in these areas. This, he said, will help in reducing the sustenance of green felling by the people living nearer to forests. -- PTI
