Indian Immunologicals to set up human vaccine plant

Hyderabad: A human vaccine plant and R&D centre is being set up by Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL) at their Gachibowli campus near here at a total cost of Rs. 50 crores. A wholly owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), IIL is currently a leading producer and distributor of animal vaccine.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Amrita Patel, Chairperson of NDDB, said that the new facility would manufacture vaccines for recombinant Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, measles, diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus and also be capable of producing new combination vaccines in the future. The vaccine manufacturing plant and the R&D centre is slated for inauguration by the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on October 3, Dr. Patel added.

IIL proposes to increase its scientific research staff to 40 from the present 18 in a year's time to power its R&D projects. This R&D centre, which is being developed at a cost of Rs. 8 crores, would be spread over 2,200 square metres and would be a `Bio-Safety Level 3' laboratory, according to K.V. Balasubramaniam, Managing Director of IIL. Dr. Patel said that IIL has also developed a human rabies vaccine, which is cheaper than most competitors.
