HYDERABAD SEPT. 19. Defending champions, Petroleum Sports Promotion Board in men's section and Railway Sports Control Board in women's section, retained the team championships in the 33rd all-India inter-institutional table tennis championship at Fateh Maidan indoor stadium here on Friday.

PSPB men defeated RSCB 3-0 while, RSCB women put it across PSPB 3-1 in the finals.

Quite expectedly, PSPB made short work of Railways in the men's final. S. Raman gave PSPB a winning start but not before his opponent Sourav Chakraborty threatened to create an upset after pulling off the second and third games with a high quality display.

However, Raman paid back the compliments with a clever blend of impressive forehand returns and variations in his serve to unsettle the youngster when it mattered most.

What settled the issue in favour of Raman was his ability to come up with cross-court forehand returns, which he repeatedly placed to the corners to catch the rival on the wrong-foot.

In the second singles, Sharat Kamal was in an unusual hurry to pack off Ranbir Das 11-8, 11-8, 11-1. Using his long reach to telling effect to smother whatever little topspin the opponent could manage and unleashing his own vintage powerful smashes on either side, Sharat gave virtually no room for Ranbir to even entertain any thoughts of a comeback.

Soumya Deep Roy ensured that the issue was not extended into the fourth singles with a methodical 11-5, 13-15, 15-13, 11-7 win over a fighting Anirban Nandy.
