Youth Cong. to target voters on cycles

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI SEPT. 19. Yet another yatra is being undertaken in the run-up to the Delhi Assembly elections due later this year. The Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress has decided to launch a Rajiv Gandhi Cycle Vikas Yatra from October 3 in all 70 Delhi Assembly constituencies to highlight the achievements of the Sheila Dikshit Government during the past five years and "expose the double face of the BJP".

According to the Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress president, Rajesh Lilothia, the yatra would most likely be flagged off from 10 Janpath by the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, on October 3. It would go round the Capital for about a fortnight to create mass awareness about the work done by the Sheila Dikshit Government in the past five years. "The yatra would also expose the failures of the NDA Government at the Centre including the large number of scams and corruption cases in which it has been involved." Charging that the NDA Government had to its credit the maximum number of scams at the Centre, Mr. Lilothia said the harsh memories of the UTI scam and the coffin gate scam were still fresh in the minds of the people.

Mr. Lilothia said the yatra would cover one district per day and in the process reach out to all the constituencies. He said the area MLAs and Councillors would also take part in this new initiative along with the office-bearers at the district and block levels. He said the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee had extended its full cooperation to the success of the yatra and youth power would seek to expose the double standards of the BJP and its leaders. Every day a public meeting would be organised in each district so that the achievements of the Government and the local representatives are highlighted before the people.

Mr. Lilothia said the youth of the Capital had already indicated their preference and the recent rout of the ABVP in the Delhi University Students Union elections had made it clear that no longer would the issues dividing people on caste and religious lines succeed.

Stating that the Assembly elections would witness the demise of BJP, Mr. Lilothia said he would urge the party high command and senior AICC leaders to accommodate the youth in the distribution of tickets and give maximum representation to the new generation. He said the common sentiment was clearly in favour of the Congress and said the unprecedented developmental work undertaken during the past five years was a visible proof of the achievements of the Congress Government in Delhi.
