`Govt. motivating farmers to use organic manure'

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM SEPT. 19. The State Government is motivating farmers to raise agricultural and horticultural crops with organic manure, according to T.S. Sridhar, State Agriculture Secretary and Agricultural Production Commissioner.

Presiding over an `organic farming festival' organised by the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems, an NGO working in traditional agriculture and health care, at Singaperumal Kovil near Chengalpattu in Kancheepuram district today, Mr. Sridhar said the Government had been creating awareness among farmers of the ill effects of chemical fertilisers.

The Agriculture, Horticulture and Agriculture Engineering departments had been holding several meetings and seminars to highlight the advantages of using organic manure. Besides, farmers had also been advised to adopt efficient water management practice. Mr. Sridhar also released a book `organic methods of pests and disease management' in English and Tamil.

K. Dhanavel, Director of Horticulture, said the department had stopped supplying chemical fertilisers to farmers from this year and was giving only organic manure. Nearly 118 lakh tonnes of vegetables and fruits and other horticultural crops were being raised on 8.5 lakh hectares in the State. The Government had allocated Rs. 30 crores for horticultural crop this year against Rs. 21 crores last year.
