The double-storeyed bakery-cum-home of the Sheikh family located at Hanuman Tekri on the Vadodara-Dabhoi road was abandoned after it was set ablaze by a 1500-strong mob on March 1, 2002, barely two days after the Godhra train carnage. A total of 14 people, including four women and three children were burnt alive. The repair work of the charred building was undertaken on Friday by Zaheera's sister-in-law Yasmin Bano, who managed to escape the mob attack on the fateful day with burn injuries, along with her two-year-old daughter. Talking to reporters at the bakery, Yasmin said she and her husband, Nafitullah, had decided to stay there and start a small business to earn their livelihood. Interestingly, Yasmin had earlier welcomed the acquittal of all the 21 accused in the Best Bakery case and also termed Zaheera and her mother-in-law Sehrunissa's charges of intimidation against the BJP MLA, Madhu Shrivastava, and his cousin and Congress corporator, Chandrakant Shrivastava, baseless.
