HC launches free legal service clinic

BANGALORE Sept. 20. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, V.N. Khare, today inaugurated a free legal service clinic, a new library, and an e-governance in judiciary facility at the Karnataka High Court premises.

After the inaugural function, the Karnataka State Bar Council and the Advocates' Association, Bangalore, felicitated Mr. Justice Khare and three other judges of the Supreme Court — Justice Shivaraj V. Patil, Justice N. Santosh Hegde, and Justice S. Rajendra Prasad.

The Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, N.K. Jain, the Advocates' Association president, K.N. Subba Reddy, and High Court judges and advocates were present.

Mr. Justice Khare will participate in the convocation of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) here tomorrow.

The Karnataka High Court Legal Services Committee has established the free legal service clinic at the High Court to provide legal advice and aid to those who cannot afford it. The problems of the poor on matters relating to agriculture, bank loans, family disputes, and the civil and criminal cases will be heard and proper advice given at the clinic.

The clinic will also accept complaints on deficiency in public services.

Members of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, victims of trafficking in human beings, disabled persons, victims of mass disaster, ethnic violence, caste atrocities, flood, earthquake, and industrial disaster, persons in custody, and people whose annual income is less than Rs. 25,000 can approach the clinic. The clinic will function on all working days from 11 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.

Training

Speaking at a function organised by the Karnataka Judicial Academy (KJA), Mr. Justice Khare said man was not born perfect but training could make him perfect and this is what the academy was doing.

He hoped that the training imparted in the academy would help judicial officers in discharging their duties in a better manner.

Introducing Mr. Justice Khare to the audience, Mr. Justice Jain said the Chief Justice of India hailed from a family of lawyers.

Justice Padmaraj delivered the vote of thanks.

The Supreme Court Judges, Justice Shivaraj V. Patil, Justice N. Santosh Hegde, and Justice S. Rajendra Prasad, judges of the Karnataka High Court, the Advocate General, the Chairman of the Bar Council, and judicial officers were present.

Earlier, Mr. Justice Khare was taken around the KJA and apprised of its activities.

The Chief Justice is in Bangalore on a three-day visit where he is scheduled to participate in several functions.
